It’s Spelling Bee season again! Time to break out the Webster’s Dictionary and put on your thinking caps. A list of spelling bee practice words will be sent home this week for all students who wish to participate in class spelling bees on Wednesday, March 24. The spelling bee is open to all 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students.

After the class spelling bees on March 24, two finalists from each class (3rd-5th grade) will be given a study booklet with which to prepare for the Stedman Elementary spelling bee. Our school spelling bee will take place on Wednesday, March 31 at 9:00 a.m. in the auditorium.

It’s P.A.C.E. Trek time again here at Stedman Elementary School!

Kids Worldwide To Virtually Trek With Ultra-Endurance Athlete Through Germany

A 27-year resident of Missoula, Montana, Staso is committed to doing what he can to inspire, educate and motivate children toward greater health and fitness. Staso also wants kids to set personal goals and reach for their dreams. As he says, "Your dreams are beyond the horizon, and you have to persevere to the horizon in order to realize those dreams."     We are all really excited about the 2010 P.A.C.E. Trek challenge here at Stedman Elementary! We’ll be keeping track of the miles logged by each team on an enlarged map of Germany located near the elementary office. We'll also be entering out data on the P.A.C.E. Trek website. A big thank you to Mrs. Simon for getting our teams organized, and for all teachers who are encouraging all students to participate in the challenge. We’ve already logged in about 65 miles today! Let’s keep it going! Check out the P.A.C.E. trek website for additional information, photos, and updates: www.pacetrek.com/germany

Fruit and Veggie Snack Program: We would like to thank “Partners in Education” (PIE) and Dr. Lister for funding the pilot Fruit and Veggie snack program for the last few months. We feel this pilot program has been successful, easy to manage in the classroom, and that it has truly leveled the playing field by providing the opportunity for all children to eat fresh fruits and vegetables in class every day. Several parents have elected to send their own healthy snacks, which is also acceptable. We plan to apply for a “Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Program” grant from the US Department of Agriculture when the applications become available in March, and we are confident that we will be funded for the following school year. In the mean time, many parents have expressed interest in seeing the program continue after Christmas vacation, and are interested in discussing possible funding sources (i.e. “pay as you go”, donations, grants, etc.). Our goal is to make it as simple as possible with the greatest possible opportunity for kids. In order to offset costs for the remainder of the school year, we have sent home a form for those parents who are interested in paying a $30 fee for their child (or who would like to sponsor additional children).
